Happy New Year!

Grab a cup of coffee and (or other hot beverage) and enjoy the snow. It looks like 2022 is off to a wild start with the record breaking snowfall, record breaking high temperatures a couple of weeks ago, and now with the temperature in the single digits.

It is also record breaking in other ways. More and more companies both large and small are getting penetrated by hackers. These hackers are organized, and often state actors. They steal and sell company and personal information.

While I was recovering from a total knee replacement, I was testing new security software. The security software was deployed on several clients.

The choice came down to two excellent vendors. Both discovered computer programs and remnants of infections that had been removed previously. Remnants will not harm your computer, but removing the remnants makes your computer more secure.

The one at a higher price point covers hardware and software that larger companies use. The companies the size I work with don’t necessarily need this much protection.

Huntress, the offering we went with, allowed us to uncover an active threat with a client that was not detected by the previous software. And we were able to deal with the threat quickly by removing it. Huntress is another level of protection that is proactive and allows you to respond to threats to your system before they take a foothold.

For about the price of a cup of coffee per computer per month, Huntress enables Nay & Associates to find and stop hidden threats that sneak past preventative security tools. Huntress focuses on a specific set of attack surfaces, vulnerabilities and exploits allowing us to protect clients from persistent footholds (backdoor entry) ransomware and other attacks.

Using Huntress enables us to isolate a compromised computer in a network to keep it from affecting other users. We can then remove the issue without end user involvement.

Huntress allows Nay & Associates to be backed by top ThreatOps researchers, some which have worked for the National Security Administration (NSA) and for Homeland Security. If I find something beyond my capabilities, I can contact them and get them involved. This is part of Huntress’ services.

At an affordable price point for small and medium businesses that don’t have the budget, staff or resources to make a proper stand against hackers, Huntress makes the protection worthwhile.

So have another cup of coffee, and mull over the idea of having a plan in place by having Nay & Associates help protect your business and your livelihood from the reality of the exponentially increasing cyberthreats.

Oh, as a side note, I just found out that Norton is wanting to place bitcoin mining on each of their client’s computers. They are creating bitcoin on your computer system. The user makes some bitcoin and Norton get 15% of it. It is legal, but it is often hidden in the fine print of the documentation nobody reads. This program would run in the background.

I wonder about why a prominent antivirus firm would be doing this. If you have Norton, review your documentation. Do you want a big company using your computer for their benefit?

Also, Norton is not a proactive solution to resolving threats to your system. As I mentioned previously, Huntress will find the threat before it takes a foothold in your system.

All the best and stay well,
Jim Nay
