Time for the holidays. Are you in panic mode or excited about Black Friday deals and shopping?

In either case, it’s easy to “click before you think”. Take a moment to “think before you click.”

Cybersecurtiy threats can put a damper on things at home and at the office. According to the Forbes Advisor, there were 2,365 cyberattacks in 2023, with 343,338,964 individuals being impacted. 2023 saw a 72% increase in data breaches since 2021.

So if you have not been impacted yet, chances are high that you will be hacked in the future if you don’t protect yourself. Here is a list of things you can do to protect yourself from cyber threats this year.

  • Turn on Multifactor Authentication. Implement multifactor authentication on your accounts and make it significantly less likely you’ll get hacked. When you turn on Multifactor Authentication, you will be required to enter a code before you are allowed to get into your account. You will receive via text, email or authentication app (Google Authenticator, Authy App)
  • Update Your Software. Make sure your browser, any applications you are currently using, and your Windows (or Mac) software is up-to-date.
  • Think Before You Click. On hyperlinks to websites in your email and regular websites, mouse over the hyperlinks before clicking to make sure it is going to a legitimate website. This time of year is when the hackers and thieves come out to play. You will be receiving Black Friday emails, special deals, and more that look legitimate. But beware…these emails are usually just a ploy to get you to click so they can steal your information.
  • Use Strong Passwords. A great password will have 12 characters or more; both upper and lowercase letters; special characters; and numbers. An easy way to do this is to make a phrase like “Ilikepumpkinpie” and change the “I” to an exclamation point or change the “e” to an @ sign or put a # between the first 4 letters. These are just a few ideas you may want to try when creating a new password.

And make sure you share all of the above information with your children, parents, and office personnel. It’s so easy for someone to click on a link in an email placed there by a hacker and then destroy your entire home computer system or your business network.

If you want protect yourself from clicking on a link created by a hacker to steal your information, you can to go one step further in protecting your computer system by installing the ConcealBrowse extension in your current browser.
