Have you ever bought a computer and didn’t know what you got yourself into? Well, believe it or not, it happened recently to yours truly.

Initial Purchase…

I had my specifications that I wanted…. a laptop with a 500 GB solid state drive. an Intel I7 processor, and at least 8 GB of memory. I found a system at a great price with all the above and even more memory (32GB). The purchase and delivery went smoothly. The laptop looked great and I expected an extremely fast computer.

Surprise, Surprise…

The problem was….The machine was slow. I’m talking slug slow, a turtle would have been a speedster compared to this. So I knew the first step was to check for any Windows updates that needed to be completed. Updates usually help and many are released from the time the computer is built to the time the computer is actually received. I thought once these were installed, the computer would surely be a rocket.

Still Crawling…

A day later, with all updates installed, the new computer was still crawling. I spent another day troubleshooting, with no luck. Until….. I checked the core processors. Only one processor was available out of the four that were on the core. This is not something that normally is an issue, even though users will sometimes disable one or more of the processors to extend battery life. Success!

Once the other 3 cores were activated , the change was amazing! Now I have a computer I can be proud of. It is super fast and allows me to work more efficiently.

Takeaway

The unexpected can happen to even an experienced computer person. The difference was steps were in place that allowed me to think through the issue and come to a satisfactory conclusion.

All the best,

Jim Nay
