Feeling old, slowing down, can’t find things as easily? No, I’m not talking about YOU getting older.

I’m referring to your Windows 7 computer. It’s in it’s twilight months. Current updates from Microsoft are primarily just security updates. By January 2020, those updates will stop. So, what are your options for keeping your computer system running smoothly and trouble free?

Option 1 (Medium-potentially free)

Update your old Windows 7 computer to Windows 10. This usually works without issues. However, there is no guarantee that all drivers will work correctly, especially on older hardware. Your drivers are software that tells the hardware how to work. For example, your printer drivers may not work and you will be unable to print anything.

Option 2 (Medium-inexpensive)

Convert your computer to a Chromebook, which is a computer operating system based on Google Chrome. Here are the steps to load it on your computer:

  1. Go to neverware.com
  2. Click on the Get Started button.
  3. Click on Get The Free Version to download a free copy of Chrome for home use.
  4. Click on the Download USB Maker button to create a bootable USB Drive version of the Chrome operating system. (You will also see the option here to download it directly to your computer.)

Provided you have a Google account, everything is simple to use and intuitive, with access to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, calendars and Gmail. If you have a Windows or Mac at home, these can be accessed through the Chrome Web store for free. Go to Chrome Remote Desktop, and click on the Add To Chrome button. DONE!

If you also have a Microsoft account, the online email and Microsoft office will also work.

For business, there are professional versions starting at $50 per license per year. This allows for professional help, updates, and the ability to control the device from the Google platform.

Option 3 (Harder- but much less expensive than a new system)

Create an external hard drive and install a full version of Windows 10. A flash drive is needed preferably a USB 3.0 USB with 16 GB minimum , 32 GB or more is better. An external, faster, M.Sata drive is relatively inexpensive. It is faster than a regular USB drive. A Windows 10 license is necessary, but the license off your old Windows 7 should work.

Using Windows USB utility to install Windows 10 is the next step. Once complete. You can boot to Windows. The speed of your system is based on the speed of the USB drive used.

A major plus, is that you can carry a full version of Windows, software, data, etc. and use any available computer to work without compromising your security.
