During the bad weather this month, my wife and I went to the movies. We saw “The Beekeeper” with Jason Statham. The movie starts off with scammers taking people’s life savings.

I told my wife, there are actual shops that do this, maybe not in quite the flamboyant way as the movie, but the results are the same. People and businesses are scammed out their hard-earned money. One of the main parts of my business is to stop problems before they happen. We have several programs we utilize, backed with experts from the NSA (National Security Administration) and Homeland Security.

If the people in the movie had spent a little bit of money for prevention and our expertise, the character Jason Statham portrayed could have kept tending his bees in peace and a lot of character’s lives would have been saved.

One example that Nay & Associates. LLC dealt with in the past was a large, multimillon dollar manufacturing company that wanted a server with a type of insecure access and no backup. We repeatedly told them that what they wanted was insecure, but they were adamant on how they wanted the server done. We had them sign off that they knowingly were not following best practices and that we could not be held liable if they were breached.

Within 2 months of installation, the company was breached from a hacker in North Korea. Their data was compromised and the business severely compromised. They called us demanding answers. I showed them all of the documentation they had signed refusing recommended security practices and protective hardware. At this point, all we could do was to give them the FBI’s field office number and tell them to contact their insurance. Over two year’s of data was lost, client information was leaked and the server had to be completely redone.

In a much smaller, personal case, a client referred me to someone that was in the process of being scammed. The scammers had already received checks of $600 and $1,200 dollars. They were requesting another $10,000 which the person was in the processing of sending them. We were able to get the transaction stopped and turned all the information we had on the scammers over to the federal authorities in charge. While the client lost a bit of money, it could have been a lot worse.

Another part of our services helps people in the aftermath of being hacked. We train them on how to:

  • Change passwords to create more secure systems;
  • Explain what 2 factor authentication (2fa) is and how to use it;
  • Spot hackers and scammers before any damage can be done;
  • Harden and secure their systems by installing security software, setting up physical firewalls and decreasing vulnerabilities in their systems to prevent additional problems.
Clients can also contact us if they receive a suspicious call, or if their computer locks up and starts blaring that they have been compromised. Most of the time, we can get rid of the problem before the client is damaged.

To sum it up, if our services were in place, “The Beekeeper” movie would not have had to happen.
