How many times have you said “That’s too expensive!” when you get a bill?

Most of the time saying that is simply a knee-jerk reaction. As a business owner, a better reaction would be to weigh the pros and cons of the products and services received before reacting in a negative way.

Here are six questions to to ask yourself after purchasing products or services:

  1. Did the contractor take the time to listen to what you wanted to accomplish?
  2. Did the project get completed satisfactorily?
  3. Was it completed on-time without several change orders?
  4. Was the job completed using quality materials?
  5. Did the contractor keep you up to date, without making excuses?
  6. Was the work guaranteed?

If you answered yes to the questions above, then you can view the money spent as an investment in your business.

Often, paying too little could mean corners were cut, inferior materials were used, and the repair may need to be redone costing much more time and money than the original estimate.

Consider the following questions:

  1. Did you need to constantly correct the contractor because they did not understand the scope of the project or ignored what you wanted?
  2. Did the contractor show up late, or not show up at all?
  3. Did you get phone calls returned, or were you ignored?
  4. Was the project only partially completed and then the contractor disappeared?

If you answered yes to the four questions above, then you may have paid too much.

The longer I’m around, the less I want to put up with aggravations such as these. When I find a good company or contractor, I stick with them, because I trust the work being done. That is one less thing to worry about, and I can focus on what I’m good at versus having to constantly look over someone’s shoulder to make sure I’m getting what I paid for.

Next time you get a bill, think about the value received, versus what was spent in time and money. Then maybe you’ll say “That was a great value!” versus “That’s too expensive!”
